History of Modhera

મોઢેરાનું જુનું નામ મોહેરકપુર હતું. તેને ત્રેતાયુગમાં "સત્યમંદિર", દ્વાપરયુગમાં "વેદભુવન", કલિયુગમાં "મોહેરકપુર" તથા "ધર્મારણ્ય" અને મધ્યયુગમાં "મોઢેરા" તરીકે ઓળખાય છે. અલ્લાઉદીન ખિલજીએ જયારે પાટણ તોડી મોઢેરાનો સવૅનાશ કર્યો ત્યારે તે વખતે મોઢેરામાં રહેતા મોઢ બ્રાહ્મણો તથા વૈશ્ય સમાજે તેમનો ઘણો સામનો કર્યો હતો. પરંતુ તેઓ બહુ સામનો કરી શકયા નહિં અને તેમને મોઢેરા છોડવાની ફરજ પડી. પરંતુ અલ્લાઉદીન ખિલજી મોઢેશ્વરી માતાજીની મૂર્તિને ખંડિત ન કરે કે નુકસાન ન પહોંચાડે તે માટે માતાજીની મૂર્તિને પાસેની ધર્મેશ્વરી વાવમાં પધરાવી દીધી અને મોઢ બ્રાહ્મણો મોઢેરા મુકી માલવા, ઉજ્જૈન, ભોપાલ, ઇન્દૌર તેમજ રાજસ્થાનના મેવાડના અલગ અલગ પ્રદેશોમાં જઇ વસ્યા. આ બધું ધુણેટીના દિવસે બન્યું હતું. મોઢેરાના મોઢ બ્રાહ્મણ સમાજના મુખ્ય બે ભાગો જેમાં મોઢ બ્રાહ્મણ તથા મોઢ વૈશ્ય સમાજ બન્યા. તેમાંથી મોઢ બ્રાહ્મણ સમાજ માં ચર્તુવેદી, ત્રૈવિધ, ધનુજા, તાંદલજા, અગિયાસણા અને જેઠીમલ એમ છ ભાગો પડયા.

Matangi had eighteen arms each having a weapon like trident, Kamandal, Shell, club, Pash, dagger etc. Goddess Matangi killed devil Karnat (In another version Shyamala sister of Matangi killed Karnat) It was mahadev trij the day Karnat was killed. Brahmins of Modhera celebrated that day with a feast and accepted modheswari as their Kuldevi. Every year on the thirteen day of Maha Month Modh Brahmins celebrate as Kuldevi's day.
